Chiropractic Care for Foot Pain

What causes plantar fasciitis? Along the bottom of your foot is a muscle known as the plantar fascia. When you use your feet, especially for activities like running, carrying heavy things, or moving along hard surfaces all day, it puts pressure on the muscles in your feet. The plantar fascia absorbs that pressure, kind of like the shocks in a car. However, too much of it can cause injury or tear the plantar fascia. When this happens, it causes foot pain.

How Chiropractors Help Foot Pain

Chiropractic adjustments work because your spine sends signals everywhere in your body. However, injuries and repetitive stress can cause your spine to come out of alignment. When your spine is out of alignment, you experience discomfort, and your body’s ability to heal itself diminishes. Foot pain, especially plantar fasciitis, is connected to your lower back. When your lower back is out of alignment, injuries to your plantar fascia don’t heal as well as they should. By adjusting your lower back and guiding it into alignment over a series of appointments, our chiropractor can help relieve your foot pain.

Managing Foot Pain After Chiropractic Care

In many cases, plantar fasciitis can’t be cured without surgical assistance; however, it typically doesn’t require surgery to manage the pain. After your chiropractic adjustment, you will want to stretch the plantar fascia and the calf muscle. Rolling a tennis ball under your foot is an effective tool to stretch your plantar fascia. Ice can be used to alleviate pain from injuries caused by muscle damage. Most importantly, you need to find a set of orthopedic inserts or shoes. An uncushioned ankle will strike the ground with too much force, causing more damage to the plantar fascia. Proper cushioning reduces that force and lets your feet heal.
